Actual state:
The hut Tutzinger Hütte is provided with high quality
drinking water from two deeply drilled wells directly situated in
front of the northern wall of the Benediktenwand. Electric water
pumps deliver the water to two plastic water tanks (10 cbm) which
are digged in about 25 meters higher. This way the necessary
pressure is produced to supply the hut. The electrically steered
pumps keep the level inside the tanks allways at the right
volume.
It is a longish report how it came to the now sufficient modern
water supply. But it is valuable to be read in order to understand
the efforts necessary to reach the state.
History
The founders of Sektion Tutzing first wanted to erect their
refuge at the top of the Benediktenwand. But where there get the
water? So only in 1908 they could buy a hut situated at the foot of
the northern wall. There a nearby spring provided sufficient water.
But having added a lavatory there had been some problems concerned
with water quality and volume. So in 1930/31 one added an
additional water resource. The pipes had to be renewed in 1952.
Between 1966 and 1968 again problems arised and required to
germinate the water. Eventually in 1976/77 there had been a new law
about water quality. This forced the planning of a completely new
water supply. After a diviner had been ordered to search for ground
water the deep drilling of wells started in 1979.
Plannings
- Because the probe drillings had resulted in two suitable wells
the water-law measures could begin in 1980.
- The plan was: 1981 building the wells, digging in the water
store tanks, digging in the water pipes and the electric
cables.
- in 1982 it was planned to set up the water pump system and also
the electric installation.
Execution of the Activities
- 1981 one could start with the activities first after midth of
june because of the bad weather and the whitsuntide vacances.
- At several weekends tons of devices, sand and grit had nbeen
transported to the base station of the ropeway.
- From may 16 to june 28 in 1981 25 cbm (more than 5 tons!) of
devices, sand and grit had been moved with 268 rides of the ropeway
to the hut; all the work voluntarily done by the members of all
local groups of the section.
- At june 19/20 a 6 ton heavy excavator-caterpillar had to be
driven up to the hut over a terrain without ways.
- At june 25, pipes, compressors, well settings, shaftlocks and
more had been flown by 9 helicopter flights to the suitable
locations near the hut.
- At juli 1 after installing the excavator arm to the caterpillar
one could start the digging.
- Then followed the digging of the trenches for the water pipes
and 2 parallel pipes for the electric cables (330m pipes
altogehther) from the 2 wells to the water tanks and to the
hut.
- Often steady bad weather and the rocky ground required very big
efforts from the workers and the voluntary assistants.
- Then excavating of the pitch for the two plastic water store
tanks and the concrete work for the wells.
- At october 3 the two water tanks had been flown in by a
helicopter.
- Some days later drive-down of the caterpillar to the
valley.
- At november 11 disassembly of the excavator attachment and
transport first via ropeway then by car to the valley.
- In 1982 there had been still some work concerning the water
supply:
- filling the trenches and the pitch of the water tanks with grit
and covering with gras layers
- flatten of the trenches of the old and new water supply and
sawing of gras
- set up of fences for the water tanks area and the wells
areas
Summary
- About 160 employments of voluntary assistants with more than
3000 working hours
- costs about 480.000.- DM
- good luck by getting money from the German Alpine Association
in munich (about 240.000.- DM)
- september 18, 1982 completion ceremony
- eventually start of the new water supply in 1983 after
successfully closing the water law measures

Only he who took the time to read through can imagine what big
efforts had been necessary by the section for "this bit of water".
(Ok, i think the least of the visitors will drink it. But in
Germany you have to wash even your feet with drinking
water!)
